Los Altos Youth Center, Los Altos CA
Several members of Kaiaulu Hula Hālau, including Kumu Michael performed at the Hui ʻIlima of Santa Clara County annual Mayday program. The program was held at the Los Altos Youth Center. Quite a distance from the City.
Being involved with the Mayday program was a return to something familiar. My association with the Mayday program began in 1994, only two years after joining Kaiaulu. My hula brothers and sisters and I would perform each year, sharing the hula that Kumu Michael had taught us. This time however, I opened the program with the mele aloha and did the opening prayer ma ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi.
It was a test of endurance for those performing the hula this year. They began with the mele kahiko "No Luna," then a quick change and dancing four consecutive mele ʻauana which were: Hula O Makee, Uluwehi O Ke Kai, Pō Laʻilaʻi, and Waikaloa. Kumu Michael and I played and sang the music for the mele ʻauana with kōkua from Reggie on ʻukulele.

It was an honor for us to be involved in this the 50th anniversary year of Hui ʻIlima!
